this song was written from a reflection on the book of Hosea. this ancient text is one of many found written by the prophets of old. Hosea had known what it was to be misunderstood but little did he know that G-D would call him to a new level of this. this calling was to love. the kind of love that leaves you vulnerable and left open to rejection, abandonment, heartbreak and betrayal. it’s the messiest of kinds that can be seen as irresponsible or foolish to many. it is not based on reciprocation, behavior or performance of the other person involved. it is without conditions. it is untainted and untarnished yet raw and unfiltered. it is wild and full of mystery. it is unmerited good in every aspect of the word.
Gomer, the recipient of such affection, understood the weight and the earth-shattering nature and the beauty of this unrelenting grace, like no one else could. to be fully known and safe, desired and tended to. it was a shelter and a healing, nurturing love. a rescuing and forgiving love. a selfless and sacrificial love. faithful and true.
the first part of the song is from her (Gomer’s) perspective and the second is from her husband, Hosea. there is a recording in the middle from a spoken word piece i have written during a study and meditation on the book of Hosea. i worked alongside a local ministry during a sermon series on these few Old Testament books and we recorded videos (in early 2020) under the title, “The Minor Prophets.” these are available on YouTube and

the intimacy of permission granted, of built trust, found in consenting and loving closeness - when held close enough to see your own reflection in another’s eyes is a remarkable good. a sacred gift.
from “eye contact: Hosea - The Minor Prophets”
“My dearest Gomer,
Salvation is my Name
“Forget not your first Love”
For I am committed to you
All you can enjoy is found in the throws of my love
I am ever for thee and you will ever know the true meaning of your name
Today and from every day that follows I renew my love vow to you
For I am faithful
Come a little closer and maybe you too can visualize
Closer still, face to face
This eye contact
Don't hide your gaze from me my love
All that has gone before I so gently let go
All I have to hold is you right here and right now
Tomorrow's yesterday shall be most sacred
And every breath a present
Look closely
For you are the maiden of my eye
There is no other.
Most affectionately yours,
Hosea”
